In Medieval Europe, people thought that aquamarine could overcome the effects of poison, and ancient mariners believed that mermaids’ lower bodies were made of aquamarine. Beryl is a beryllium aluminum cyclosilicate mineral that comes in several gemstone quality varieties, one of which is aquamarine (other varieties of beryl include emerald, heliodor, and morganite). Aquamarine gets its gorgeous color from trace amounts of iron, and its name from the Latin “aqua marina”, meaning “sea water”. Brazil is the leading producer of aquamarine, but it is also mined in Pakistan, Russia, and the United States.
Metaphysically, aquamarine acts as a protection stone for sea travelers. This belief goes back to ancient times. Today, this stone is known more generally as a stone of good luck and balance. Aquamarine is the birthstone for March.
